Cities

CITIES is based on artistic investigations of the urban living space and considers the city as space and body.

The first works of CITIES were created during study visits to the German Academy Villa Massimo in Rome and Paris in 1997 and 1998. They were inspired by artists of Fluxus and process art such as Peter Weibel, Valie Export, Joseph Beuys, Rebecca Horn, Francis Alÿs, as well as writings on the contemporary conception of space such as Rem Koolhaas’ “S, M, L, XL” or Michael Lingner’s “Observable Time”, among others. The series was continued in 2009 with the four-part series “E.L.”, commissioned by the City of Zurich to mark the farewell of Mayor Elmar Ledergerber.

The individual series are titled after the respective city – “Rome” (1997), “Paris” (1998) and “Zurich” (2009). They each comprise 20 to 40 sheets, 107 x 79 cm, black industrial tape on laid paper and are represented in public and private art collections.

In December 2009, the self-published artist’s book “Open City – Voyager’s Golden Guide – Zürich No 1” was published for CITIES ZURICH – a modern city guide in table book form, which was accompanied by many events such as “walk and talk”. The artist’s book is collected by the Centre for Artists’ Publications Weserburg Museum for Modern Art, the Art Collection of the City of Zurich and the Institute of Modern Art Nuremberg, among others.
